As each new year begins, we are surrounded by talk of resolutions, goals, and intentions. It’s almost become a universal ritual where we reflect on the past and set our sights on what lies ahead. Some deplore this idea, and others, like myself, consider it a right of passage.

Here’s what I have noticed.

Healthcare encourages a structured, rules-based approach, which may sometimes appear to stifle innovation and creative thinking. The industry emphasizes protocols, evidence-based practices, and standardization for good reasons— after all, patient safety and quality care depend on them. However, this focus can inadvertently discourage dreaming big and thinking outside the box. This mindset can feel limiting for those of us in healthcare, especially when we know bold ideas and innovative solutions are essential to transforming the industry.
When making future goals, especially in an environment like healthcare, here are some key considerations to inspire intentional and impactful planning:

1. Embrace the Impossible

Healthcare often focuses on incremental improvements— getting better at what we already do. But what if we aimed for transformational change? What problem would I solve if resources weren’t a limitation?

2. Focus on Purpose, Not Just Process

In healthcare, it’s easy to become consumed by the how—the steps, policies, and workflows; however, the why is just as important. Consider your legacy. What legacy do you want to leave in this industry?

3. Prioritize Collaboration and Influence

No big idea in healthcare succeeds in isolation. You need buy-in, partnerships, and a shared vision. Building a network of like-minded changemakers can amplify your impact and help overcome institutional inertia. When creating goals, try to ask: Who do I need to align with to achieve this? How can I influence others to see the value in thinking differently?

4. Redefine Failure

In healthcare, failure is often associated with harm or poor outcomes, making it deeply feared. However, in the context of innovation, failure becomes a stepping stone. As I learned from Michael Hyatt, “If you are not failing, then you are not stretching yourself far enough.” The stretch is vital.

5. Consider the Ripple Effect

Every goal you set has the potential to impact not only your life but also your patients, colleagues, and community. As a bedside nurse, I always made goals with my patients, which often taught them to take the goals home with them and share them with others. You never really know who you may affect until you try.

6. Advocate for Systemic Change

Individual goals are important but don’t underestimate your ability to influence systems. In fact, I would challenge each individual to look at their current systems and then dream and make them better. Look at what systemic barriers must be removed for others to dream big in healthcare. And then, how can you elevate your voice to advocate for cultural or structural shifts?

7. Plan for Long-Term Impact

Healthcare careers are often spent focusing on immediate needs and urgent tasks. But long-term vision is key to driving change. Setting goals for the next 5, 10, and even 20 years becomes essential. Revisiting and adapting your goals annually to reflect your growth and evolving priorities is a mandate.

8. It Starts with You

Finally, your journey is uniquely yours, and dreaming big starts with believing you can break free from the status quo. I believe in you; now, isn’t it your turn to believe in yourself?

The visionary mindset is a must in every industry, including healthcare. Those bold enough to dream beyond today’s constraints and create the future of care will make the most impactful and meaningful change. What big dreams will you pursue this year? And how will you inspire others to follow suit?
