I’ve been working on my gratitude practice lately, but I realized that sometimes my gratitude feels short-lived. It’s not that I’m not thankful, but I often rush through it without really taking time to reflect on what I’m grateful for, why it matters, and the possibilities it brings. Today, I spent some time thinking about reconnecting with that grateful heart and was reminded how powerful that experience can be.
If you’ve ever felt the same, these reflections might help you, too.

Why is gratitude so difficult right now in my life?

Most would agree that gratitude is easier to find when you are happy and full of joy than when you are down on your luck. Gratitude never promised to be easy, but the benefits have been well-documented for years. Keep it simple and start with the basics—for example, “I am breathing.”

When was the last time I was genuinely grateful?

Again, most would agree it was during a beautiful experience, not a detrimental event such as a death, loss, or hardship. However, if you can recall a time when you experienced genuine gratitude, it might start a chain reaction, leading to even more grateful moments.

What part of my journey am I most grateful for?

Life is a blessing that we often take for granted. Just as not everything is good, nor is everything awful. Reflect on a time when you believed and experienced joy, no matter how short-lived.

Where did I go? Who did I meet? What did I learn?

Introducing something new into one’s life often brings about joyful experiences that stimulate the art of gratitude. Many fall into the trap of dwelling on bad experiences. If this happens, let it go—that’s not the purpose of this exercise.

When did I step out of my comfort zone?

We all know this is a critical talent, but we sometimes forget the vital message. If you can recall a time when you did something you were fearful of, chances are you survived the experience, which is something to be grateful for. Survival itself can trigger gratitude and be a great starting point for a more formal practice.

Every day brings new opportunities for growth, learning, and reflection. This exercise may help you gain deeper insights into yourself—just as it did for me—revealing who I am and who I strive to become. The journey of self-discovery continues, and I look forward with faith and curiosity to see where the path may lead next as we all aspire to lean into it.
